Line of Defense

Upon finding our home in Ireland, we quickly noticed that we had a strawberry patch already developed in the back garden. It was winter time, but the anticipation set in of what was to come. We researched what maintenance would be best for the kind of strawberry patch we had before Spring arrived. Slowly we began to see a change. First it was the buds of the flowers. Then came the blooms of the flowers, and finally the fruit!

Excitement of eating our very own strawberries was in all of the family. We watched the strawberries grow in size and darken in color. Plans of making strawberry jams, pies, breads were on the brain. The day arrived when we thought we would take our first pick.

We gathered a bucket to collect the strawberries and the family headed out only to find that the largest, most ripened strawberries were already eaten by none other than bugs! We stayed optimistic and thought maybe it was just these first few that we found. To our dismay, the bugs had the first pick long before our day of delight. Our reaction was to research what we could do now to the patch in hope of saving the strawberries to come. From what we could find, there really wasn't a good method of defense on our part with a strawberry patch low to the ground without using chemicals.

After a few days of this discovery, the thought came to mind, "How grateful I am that God has given His children the means to defend the enemy!" His Word is our line of defense. As we read the Word of God, we not only equip ourselves to fight against the enemy, we become more aware of the enemy before the fight. We do not have to live helpless awaiting the enemy to devour us. God has blessed us with His Word!! 

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." 

2 Timothy 3:16-17

"For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

DREAM 2015

 After weeks of preparing, shopping and praying, we set off for DREAM 2015 last week. Kendra was asked to oversee the creche, which is similar to our nursery/preschool. She prepared the sessions for the 1-3 year olds. The overall theme of the conference was “Made for More”. There was a morning and evening session each day with a total of 5 sessions. 

Upon arrival, we quickly began unloading and setting up this “Creation” themed room for these little ones. We should’ve taken pictures of the before scene (meaning before the children arrived). With a team of 12 rotating throughout the sessions, we cared for, prayed for, played with, and had moments of teaching for 25 young hearts. 



How did it turn out? We didn't use every activity prepared for them. In fact, we weren't brave enough to bring out the colored rice, or many of the other sensory play items for fear of creating even more of a mess than we already had. We also weren't able to use every story board planned, or even have a time for songs each session. The story blocks that were made soon became presents to unwrap rather than blocks to stack during the first session. There was no schedule, and it may have even looked like chaos to some.

However, a verse came to mind in 1 Corinthians that says, "Let all that you do be done in love." It was a true pleasure for us to oversee this age group. The greatest highlight was giving parents the opportunity to engage in the worship service without being called. Each session we were able to call fewer parents. 

I can remember a time in ministry when I would've been frustrated at the situation. Thinking about all the hours of preparation, and walking away disappointed. I praise God for the growth He has done in me to walk away rejoicing for the gift we were able to give others. How rewarding it feels!!

WITH or WITHOUT

The above verse in Philippians has crossed my mind over the past couple of weeks several times. I would like to believe that I would be strong enough to say I am content in any situation; however, after walking along a refugee the past couple of weeks, I wonder how strong would I be?

For several weeks, I would see a particular lady at early morning prayer on Thursdays. She was obviously at the end of her pregnancy. It was the week that she was due when I found out she was a refugee from Nigeria, she didn't know anyone except a couple of people in the church, and this was her first baby. I would have never known these circumstances from her smile she had each time I saw her. She looked and sounded as if joy filled her life in every way.

When I began to investigate a little further, I found out that she was climbing 7 flights of stairs each time she went out, and she was to walk to the hospital when it was time for the baby. Her response was that it was good exercise. Once she had the baby, she was to travel to another town about an hour away for other instructions. I thought "oh, she'll go home and in a week or so, they'll move her." I was surprised to find out that she had a friend pack her belongings while she was in the hospital, and when she left the hospital she boarded a bus with her newborn and went to Portlaoise. 

I began to think of my own experiences with having a baby: how many visitors I had, how much baby stuff I received in showers, how all of our kids had a nursery, etc...My heart broke. This is not the first time I have seen lives with such little, and thought how blessed my life has been. Her story challenged me once again to be very grateful each and every day, and to share the goodness of God with others. 

God orchestrated this lady to go to Porlaoise where we were able to connect her with some other missionary friends and a great church. We are looking forward to hearing how she is doing over the next few months. 

To answer my question, how strong would I be? I know from Paul's next verse that we all can be strong in any situation...

1910

What is 1910? It’s the year that the house in Ireland we live in was built. It was the house that our Landlord lived in as a child. He refurbished the house around 2004, so it does not seem that we are living in a home over a hundred years old. The Landlord now lives in a newer home on the same property just up the hill from the old house. He calls our house the old house. 

When driving around Ireland, it doesn’t take long for you to recognize that history is cherished in this culture. Our tendency is to toss away that which is old, but here what is considered old has a history. What is history? One definition states “a tale, story”, and another says, “a chronological record of significant events.” History may not always be something we are proud of, or even something we want to remember. On the other end, history may bring joyful memories and laughter. Either way, it is our history that has brought us to where we are, and has a definite story to tell.

Believing that God has a master plan brings history to even a new level of appreciation. Psalm 37:23 says from the New Living Translation, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” How exciting to think the Lord takes our history, every part, to fulfill his master plan.  To think His heart is to never throw it out, but only to refurbish and bring new life is a joyful thought! Also, to think how each of our lives hold a chronological record of significant events brings His wonder into reality.

We are a prized possession, one to be cherished...history and all!

ZOOM OUT!

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

 and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways, and he will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

One of my favorite children's books is called Zoom and another is called ReZoom. They are some of my favorites because they remind me that God sees the Big Picture. These wordless books challenge your imagination and keep you guessing. Just when you think you know where you're at, you turn the page to see you're probably wrong. They are pictures within pictures. One book will zoom you in while the other zooms you out.

As some may remember, it was my desire to be in Ireland in time for the boys to start school in August. While I thought this plan made the most sense, it was God who zoomed me out the past 2 months to realize what they needed was to homeschool with mom. 

As challenging as it has been on our finances, I am grateful that the Lord sees the big picture and gave me this time with the boys and away from work. I've enjoyed our daily walks and listening to all their questions. Their walk with the Lord has deepened over the past couple of months, and it has been amazing to see how God cares about preparing ALL of our family for the mission field in Ireland. I know these past few months will be a mark in their spiritual walk with the Lord, and one they will never forget!

Too many times we sit in a zoomed in position in our life and complain where He has us. We live frustrated and disappointed. It would have been easy to be disappointed that the boys missed starting school and now I have to homeschool. I could have questioned that I no longer had a job and how are we going to pay the bills? If I stayed in those zoomed in emotions, I may have missed some of the greatest days God had planned for my children. I chose to believe and trust God that He knows best. He sees the zoomed out pages, and His plan is good!

A Twenty Year Prayer

At the age of 16, I had the privilege of attending my first overseas mission's trip. It was in the beautiful country of England.  When I found out there was a mission's trip to Europe, I knew I had to go. I had a longing to see Europe ever since I was a young child listening to my grandpa's stories of WWII. I didn't care where in Europe; I just wanted to go. I was intrigued with culture.

During those 10 days in England, God began to deepen my longing from the landscape of Europe to the people who lived there. I remember after I came back home asking God, "how can I still be a part?" His simple answer was to pray, and pray particularly for the children of Europe.

Twenty years later, I am still praying for Europe. That question at 16, "how can I still be a part?", still resonates in my spirit. Only now, my part is not only prayer. God has brought our family through a journey to answer the call to serve the nation of Ireland. Excitement doesn't begin to express our feelings. We believe in a matter of weeks, our feet will walk on this great land as Missionary Associates! 

And what is God saying now...

As we were preparing for a service a few months ago, God showed me something about my years of praying. I was looking at a picture from Students for Christ (Europe's ministry to college students), when God reminded me how long I have been praying for Europe. He brought this thought, "the very people you have been praying for the past 20 years could be some of the very people you reach while you are in Ireland." This thought brought me to my knees yet again. I may never know until heaven what impact my twenty years of praying has brought, but I do know that God asked a young girl at the age of 16 from a small town in Oklahoma to begin praying. I know He is a God of purpose. I know that God has had a master plan from the beginning of time, and He has given our family the opportunity to minister in Europe for such a time as this. God is good!!

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people." Ephesians 6:18

From Paul...dictated by Randal

My study of the Apostle Paul the past couple of weeks has brought several thoughts. Paul is known as one of the greatest men in the history of the church. His personal experience with the Lord was life changing at the least. However, I found there are some similarities between Paul's life and my own that the Lord revealed to me while I was studying that are worth sharing. 

There have been various times that I have questioned "Can God use me as a missionary?, Am I even qualified?" Another battle I face from the enemy is the reminder of my age. It was these questions and thoughts that the Lord brought such encouragement from studying Paul. Here are just a few comparisons that the Lord showed me from reading about his life and qualifications to be a missionary:

Both the Apostle Paul and myself...

• were over 40 years of age on our first missionary journey
• were a believer for at least 10 years before our first missionary journey
• were called by God
• were given great grace
• were given a thorn in the flesh that kept us humble (If you're unfamiliar with me, I lost my right hand in a tragic accident at the age of 10)
• have a great love for people
• were filled with the Spirit
• have a heart of a servant
• known to be diligent and persevered to run the race
• Paul was trained in theology, and I continue my training

Why are these important to know? Encouragement. It was the last 20 years of Paul's life that he had the most impact in his ministry. I'm excited at the thought of my next 20 years of ministry. My prayer is to be fruitful! A verse of Paul's that I love and relate to is Philippians 3:13-14, "Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

I am thankful for the work the Lord has done in my heart, and how He continues to mold me. I pray you too have found encouragement to press on toward what is ahead in Christ. The outcome can only be good! I am 50 years old now, and will be leaving for my 2nd missionary journey to Ireland soon. God is never late!

"Ready to go home?"

If you've ever been in a situation where you've stepped away and asked, "how did I get here?", then you have a more understanding of my feelings the past week. To recall a few events... a little over a week ago I began to feel an unusual pain that I thought would just go away. Day after day, the pain began to increase to the point I could no longer walk, sit, or sleep. It was time to see a doctor. The diagnosis was a staff infection, and to see how it was with a couple of days of medication. The doctor mentioned we might need to go to the ER. As I  laid on my bed in severe pain for a couple of days, I asked myself "how did I get here?". There was no answer to how I came about this staff infection only that it came sudden.

After a couple of days, we visited the ER and then was admitted to the hospital for surgery. You can imagine that I questioned even more, "how did I get here?" while laying in the hospital for 3 days. I was never without pain, and most of the time it was difficult to rest. The day after the surgery one of the doctor's came by and said everything went well. However, due to the deepness of the infection and how much they needed to cut out, I'll be needing home health care twice a day. Again, "how did I get here?" With the talk of home health coming to my house to take care of me, I began to feel overwhelmed. How long was I to be bedridden? How much longer can I stay like this? I fully expected to take the medication given days before and be back to normal. Yet, this was not the case. 

It was on my last day there that all changed by a simple question, "ready to go home?" Up until now, my least favorite person was the surgeon. He wasn't very personable and usually inflicted a lot of pain to see what he needed to do. It was toward the end of the day when the surgeon walked into the room. At this point, I was ready to call it a day. Enough pain had been brought on from nurses and it was time to rest. I had received the bad news of home health from the other doctor earlier that day. The last thing I wanted was to see was the surgeon. In fact, I probably began to tear up as he walked in knowing that it meant more pain. I didn't escape the pain he brought to check my wound; however, after his examination he turned my situation around from dark to light by asking..."ready to go home?" What did this mean? No more examinations, no home health, and less pain! I would be able to heal on my own and I wouldn't be in this bed much longer.

It has been a few days since this experience. I am rejoicing that the Lord is healing me more each day. I can now walk, sleep more restful, and I am off pain medicine. As I look back over the past week, I am reminded how God is always with us. He will never put more on us than we can bear. I am also reminded that when it looks the darkest, he can turn your situation around even from your least favorite source, and it can happen in an instant.

These reminders are important to our family as we travel through our journey...His call. Our call to Ireland has been a journey, and we have gained much along the way. There have been questions of if we will make it, but know that even when it looks the darkest, he can turn our situation around in an instant. We are still believing the remainder of our budget to be raised, so we can set foot on a nation that God has planted in our hearts. The question the surgeon asked not only stirred my heart to be out of the hospital, but it stirred my heart for where God has called us...Ireland. Our family is "ready to go home"

25 Thousand or More!

The Wall of Jerusalem at the time of Nehemiah

I recently shared the story of Nehemiah's call to rebuild the wall in a children's service. The theme that was covered was "Overcoming Obstacles". As I was rereading the story to prepare the message, I was amazed again at the success of Nehemiah. No doubt there was adversity around every corner. No doubt the task at hand seemed impossible. My amazement was the response that God gave in order for Nehemiah's call to be fulfilled...people, and a lot of people!

From what I can count, there were about 40+ different groups who helped Nehemiah rebuild the wall. How many were in these groups? Some count the total number to be 25 Thousand or More! The Bible says they were not all skilled builders. They were men and women who heard the heart of Nehemiah, and said they wanted to be a part of what God was going to do.

The outcome of God's people joining the call was this wall being rebuilt in 52 days! 52 days! Not years, not months, but days! It can almost leave you speechless when thinking about Nehemiah's call. One can only say that it is astounding what can be done when God's people join together for His purposes.

The story of Nehemiah is great encouragement for our family as we prepare for Ireland. God called, brought favor, provided and protected in order for His call to be fulfilled in Nehemiah's life. Our family is trusting God for the same outcome. Our numbers may not total 25 Thousand or More, but there have been many who have heard our heart for Ireland and responded by joining the call through prayer and financial support. We feel God will use our family to reach lives in Ireland. It is a nation with less than 1% of believers in Jesus. We have been given the opportunity to go and serve the people of Ireland.

Nehemiah would not have been able to rebuild the wall on his own. God sent the people he needed. We can believe God for the same.

PEAK SEASON

Are you a part?

It's June...it's summer...it's hot! However, it happens to be the beginning of the "PEAK SEASON" for these radiant flowers. Is it even possible to pass by one of these and not smile, or awe in His wonder? Passing a field of sunflowers will no doubt turn your head. There are many flowering plants that will produce multiple blooms. Yet, God chose for these tall beauties to have one bloom, one stem.

Nevertheless...

Sunflowers are made of anywhere between 1000-2000 individual flowers at the base of the bright yellow petals. If we're counting parts, you can add the 2000 seeds that form at the center of the flower. I believe it is safe to say that it is the work of all these parts that enable this bloom to stand tall.

So, why the sunflower?

A few months ago, a special lady shared at Randal's birthday party, the importance of having many seeds in the bloom of a sunflower. She then shared how she felt a part of our Baird Journey; one of the many seeds that are needed and used for His purposes. With "PEAK SEASON" beginning for the sunflowers, it is also "PEAK SEASON" for the Baird Journey. If we are going to depart for Ireland in time for the boys to start school, then we are in "PEAK SEASON". We are believing and declaring for God to move on our behalf during this "PEAK SEASON".

What's needed?

Over the past year, we have added 53 individuals/families/churches to our monthly support team. There has also been numerous individuals/families/churches who have given offerings toward the Baird Journey. This has set us up at 98% of our cash budget raised and almost 45% of our monthly support.

We lack about 50% of our monthly support in order to have clearance for Ireland.

We are grateful for each one who has prayed for, encouraged, financially supported, and loved our family. They are the many seeds that allow the one to stand tall! They are also many seeds sowed into a nation whose waiting to stand tall. Our heart is to reach the people of Ireland, and we also believe it is "PEAK SEASON" for this nation. Will you be a seed?    Have you ever been selected for something? Possibly it was as a child to be part of a team, or on the job for a particular task. How did it feel to know that you were selected, that someone thought you were "the most suited"? Someone thought you would be the BEST pick. Have you ever considered how you are God's "most suited"?
   
   The Lord brought to mind this concept of selection when thinking about His call. It was even more evident when thinking of our Missionary training last summer. It was amazing to hear of all the specific places God called each of our 2014 class. Each individual/family had a story of God leading them to a specific place; their call to the mission field.
   
   

   

   Our family is humbled to think that we were carefully chosen by God as being the best or "most suitable" for the nation of Ireland. What has He called you to? Is it a nation? A particular ministry? Your community? Your school? Without a doubt, we believe He has called you. Jeremiah 1:5 reminds us, "before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart..." For us, to know that God selected us for Ireland isn't the only excitement, but to know that He will enable us to go is even more exciting. For each call, He has a plan and is willing to put it into action with our faith and trust in Him. His promise is to "continue His work until it is finished..."
   
   
   
   
   

How is God Using You?

On a very special night before Katherine was born, even before we knew we were having a girl, I was feeling very low. Randal took the time to pray for me, and as he was praying God used Randal to speak His heart. I don't know if you've ever had anyone prophesy over you, but what I can say is your spirit knows when God is speaking to you. As Randal was praying, God used him in the gift of prophecy. 

Some of Randal's prayer said this, "God is giving you what He has promised you. You are having a girl, and He will begin to give you the things the enemy has stolen from you over the years." As Randal prayed this, I knew in my spirit that God was speaking to me. It was weeks later that we found out we were having a girl. 

Since Katherine has been born, there has never been a day that God hasn't reminded me of that special night. Each night as I put her down for bed and pray for her, God reminds me that He is faithful. He has used her many times over the last 2 years as a reminder that God is speaking and will fulfill His promises.

I often wonder if God can use Katherine at such a young age to impact my life so much everyday, how much more is He willing and able to use me to touch lives? I pray that I too can remind others of His goodness, faithfulness and love each day just by smiling as Katherine does. 

Next time you see Katherine, let it be a reminder that God desires to use you and He will fulfill His promises!

 

Lions, Tigers, and Bears! OH MY!

A few weeks ago, we sat down as a family to watch "The Wizard of Oz". Since then, the boys have watched it a few times, and are now quoting lines. Samuel decided each member of our family played a role in the movie.

A Clover Tale

Did you know that St. Patrick was kidnapped? This is how he came about to be in Ireland. He was a man who faced many trials, but along the way encountered the one who would change his heart and life. He found Christ!

St. Patrick shared the love of God with the land that kidnapped him from his homeland. He ministered for over 29 years in Ireland and brought thousands to know Christ by using the image of the clover. He would tell others the story of Christ and the Trinity by using the 3-leaf clover. He also planted 300 churches throughout the nation despite the anger he might have had toward the people who took him from his family.

GREENTEAM

From his life, I think of the verse, "obedience is better than sacrifice." I also think how God took a man's willingness to share his testimony to reach thousands. Our prayer is that we too can share our testimony with the lost in Ireland as St. Patrick did. We are believing to be a part of yet another harvest He has planned in Ireland.

What is students for christ?

More significant choices such as vocation, lifestyle, and relationships are made during the ages of 18-25. One of these major choices is spiritual. SFC exists to give opportunity to reach the college campuses for Jesus. One of their primary goals is to encourage the Christian student. Statistics have shown that 90% of students who have grown up in the church may never return to the church after college. The college campus is a mission field! 

   
 Our family has the great privilege to partner with SFC in Limerick, Ireland. We are excited about the opportunity to be a family for a young life while they are away from their family, and to help them navigate through life's many tough questions. We will be meeting with college students in small groups, formal meetings, and spending one-on-one time with many individuals. We will also be helping Christian students learn to reach out to their peers who may not have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

GREENTEAM

SFC is one area of ministry that are family will be involved in while we are in Ireland. By reaching the college campus, families the workplace, and nations are touched. Ireland has less than 1.5% of believers in Jesus Christ, and where we will be working is even less. Help us reach the college campus and be a part of SFC by going Green! Fruition - Taking Hold

As 2014 moves on, our family has taken time to pause and reflect on the years passed and His goodness. Over the last few years, God has given our family some concrete words of focus for the coming year. In 2012, the Lord encouraged us in "Moving Forward". As we looked back, this word was evident throughout 2012 that the Lord was indeed moving us to something. 

When making a commitment to surrender your life to Christ, it isn't long before you learn that His plans will become your plans. In 2013, the path He had us on took a new name as we "Forged Ahead". He continues to set our pace and steps that we are to take. In looking at what He has called us to, our first thought is gratitude. We are thankful for His promises and the hope He has given us through Christ. We are thankful for the plans He has called our family in bringing others this Hope. We are reminded of Abraham's promise and encouraged by his faith in Romans 4:20-22 (Amplified).

"No unbelief or distrust made him waver (doubtingly question) concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong and was empowered by faith as he gave praise and glory to God,Fully satisfied and assured that God was able and mighty to keep His word and to do what He had promised.That is why his faith was credited to him as righteousness (right standing with God)."

In 2014, the words that the Lord has given our family are "Fruition-taking hold". Fruition by definition means:

1. Realization of something desired or worked for; accomplishment:  2. Enjoyment derived from use or possession. 3. The condition of bearing fruit.

Our family continues to wait on the Lord as He unfolds His plans. We look to Him for understanding and direction. Like Abraham, we give thanks and glory to God for His promises. Our assurance remains in Him and know that He is able and mighty to do what He has promised. We begin each day by taking the next step that He calls us to. We believe that as we live each day more in faith, we move closer toward His promises. We are anticipating "taking hold" of what He will give us in 2014. We are anticipating souls saved, deeper relationship with Him, being His hands and feet along the way, and watching Him move in and through us for His purposes.

One promise we are believing to "take hold" of is the call to minister in Ireland. We are believing that we will be departing this summer. We have made great strides, but still have much to gain. Our current budget raised is 70% of cash and 26% monthly commitments. We are praying for others to become a part of this call and join the "greenteam". THANKSGIVING Twist

As we approach this Thanksgiving, the Lord has put on my heart many times over the last month the verse that Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." When I think of what to give thanks for, my first thoughts are usually the many blessings the Lord has bestowed upon my life including His love and grace.

However, this Thanksgiving the Lord has brought to my mind the many trials I have faced and has challenged me to be thankful. Not just thankful for the victories out of the trials, but actually thankful for the difficult and challenging time.  I read not long ago in a book on leadership about courage. It said you cannot have courage without fear. The more I have thought about this the more I have thought about the similarities between blessings and trials. The experiences that I have faced, although not always pleasant, have molded my strength in the Lord, my trust in the Lord, my love for the Lord, and my witness of the Lord. It is because of these things that I can truly "give thanks in all circumstances". 

A.W. Tozer once said, “Perhaps it takes a purer faith to praise God for unrealized blessings than for those we once enjoyed or those we enjoy now.” This Thanksgiving I have been challenged to look beyond the obvious into those things unrealized and give thanks, a "Thanksgiving Twist". What I have found is His blessings are limitless!

Tribute to Travis

Ten years ago today, October 21, 2003, our lives changed. Travis Austin Baird was born. His name came from Texas heros, and he is and will always be one of the Baird Family heros. We have enjoyed watching Travis mature over the last 10 years. He is a wonderful son and brother, who has a soft spot for his sister.

As a Tribute to his 10 years of life, Travis wanted to draw our "Baird Journey"board for October and write our next blog. We are so thankful that God chose to bless us with Travis. Our family has the privilege in taking part in God's plan for Travis. We feel blessed beyond words to be a part of his life.

Part of the plan for Travis' life is to join in the call of our family to Ireland. The Baird Family is grateful for your prayers and support in our Baird Journey.
